Hello and Herda-Hadda-Herda my peeps.

I hope people still be readin. I know I do. Gots any suggestions for me or anyone else, I’m looking for some. I’ll read anything (on the toilet or while eating cereal (my dad worked in a cereal factory so I read a lot)).

Give me your picks here: Anything goes, but try to summarize if possible. Links are also righteous and might get you laid (karma).

I’ll start off with my favorite books of all time, the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian. These books will make you smarter and you’ll have fun in the process.

Wiki link

I’ve been through all 20 books 6 times, but I can’t bring myself to read the 21st, as it’s the last & also unfinished…maybe someday.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m all over the place on this subject & that’s a good thing. I picked this up in a Barnes & Noble this summer & read the first chapter. Hooked, but didn’t buy it. Saw it later the same day in a Target for 10% off B&N price, went home, read it in one sitting. Great shtuff~

When these come out, buy them, read them, learn a lot. Mixed with various genii writers, “It’s a trip, its got a funky beat, and i can bug out to it.” Old knowledge is better than no knowledge I always say~

You must read ‘Jitterbug Perfume’ by Tom Robbins!  All of his books are great, my favorite is ‘Still Life with a Woodpecker’, also recommended. ‘Jitterbug Perfume’, in particular, will resonate with a UYD nationalist. I had just recently finished reading it when I first began listening to UYD, some-odd years ago.  I was kinda freaked out.  I have a copy that I intend to send to Jah and Seth one of these days.  I don’t want to give a synopsis and I recommend that you just dive in.  It is too fun much fun to discover Tom Robbins without any preconceptions, he’s a wild mother fucker!

I’m reading Bonfire of the Vanities right now by Tom Wolfe.  Excellent book.  I already saw the movie years ago so I know the plot, but I am enjoying it nonetheless.

I haven’t started reading them yet but I hear the A Song of Ice and Fire books are excellent. I am looking forward to reading them on my new tablet and making my eyes bug out.

They are great! I finished A Game of Thrones while the show was on, and have a good chunk of A Clash of Kings under my belt. I love that there is just such a vast amount to read to start with. I’ve never been into waiting for the new book from a favorite series to come out. I prefer to lag behind.

Yeah, Tom Robbins is the shit. Jitterbug changed my whole outlook on things. I later burned through the rest of his books, but have returned to Jitterbug Perfume many times since.

Also just finished The Lost City of Z by David Grann. It’s about this dude Percy Fawcett spent years exploring the Amazon back in the day. He was tough as shit and a little crazy in his search for the mythical city of riches.

On the non-fiction tip; I super enjoy Jon Krakauer’s “Under the Banner of Heaven”, “Into the Wild”, and “Where Men Win Glory”. He keeps you turning the page.

I’m reality/historical fiction based, but if the ch1zzuh recommends, I will peruse…

Reading is so dope. I recently finished “We Need To Talk About Kevin” by Lionel Shriver, which has been made into a motion picture starring my girl Tilda Swinton. It’s mad fucked up but I couldn’t put it down and the movie looks like it’ll be pretty fresh.

If anyone likes memoirs as much as I do, “The Big Rewind” by Nathan Rabin (editor of the AV Club) was very entertaining, especially since he grew up in the Chicagoland area just like yours truly.

Be cool about fire safety.

This is an autobiography of a reformed L.A. gang member. West coast flavor.

The movie “Walk the line” came out of this book, but is only like 1/20th of its contents. Some crazy stories in here.

I got 3 books to recommend:

Phantoms in the Brain.  Non-fiction and absolutely fascinating.  You get to learn about crazy things like phantom limbs and capgras delusion (Seth had this for a brief period in the early days of UYD).  Changes the way you view the world and your own mind.

Shantaram.  Long sprawling adventure novel based on the authors life.  Really well written good story.  Grabs your attention early and doesn’t let it go.

Blindsight.  Average length novel.  First contact.  Scary and intense and exciting and sweet.

I’m finding slightly childish free junk on Google Books a lot that I read before bed, so far I haven’t been upset by any of them.

I’ve read through the entire Wizard of Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Turns out that as per usual the book is way better than the movie and the rest of the books in the series are quite creative and fun to read and not as childish as you may imagine.

There is a compiled book full of short stories called Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling that give an interesting look into why animals are what they are.

I read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and it was good.

I’m now reading Following the Equator by Mark Twain (I’m pretty sure it’s from his diaries while riding on a ship around the equator), and just about anything he writes is good.

Then there are the standbys of 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell.

There is a book called Wish You Well by David Baldacci that I cried through (it’s a story of some kids growing up in the holler back in the day), and any of his books while way different than this one are all good.

I’ll have to look at my bookshelf and figure out which books are my favorites, the list above is just my most recent readings. Mostly free off Google Books. #bookclub

Former Lit dork (that’s my degree) now mainly non-fiction….so , uh, I’ll try to contain myself.

Fiction:
Currently reading “Freedom” by Jonathan Franzen and really enjoying it. It’s also the first book I’ve downloaded. As someone who used to work in/manage bookstores: I feel like a traitor. But I still buy my expensive photo/art books at the locally owned shop…so…not damned?

“Geek Love” by Katherine Dunn. Seriously, quit sleeping on this and kiss my first edition ass : http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13872.Geek_Love. Her only book worth a damn, sadly.

Doris Lessing “Good Terrorist”, Doris is a favorite.

“Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace. Again, kiss my 1st edition ass and quit whining over footnotes being used in a 1000+ page novel. You kids.Get off my lawn!

And a little non fiction:
http://www.amazon.com/Life-You-Save-May-Your/dp/0374529213
Seriously, could I be any more excited? Flannery O’Connor? Walker Percy? Thomas Merton? Dorothy Day? Heroes and awesome writers, all of them. And this book is a clusterfuck of goodness.
