I’m pretty sure he’s getting punched. Shouldn’t we do something?

I’m almost sorry to say smashing pumpkins was my favorite band in highschool / early 20s.

such a disappointment…. JESSICA SIMPSON? really? Not Ryan Seacrest?! I shook their hands and got autographs. WTF. I thought when a band died it died. Now it goes to fairydust heaven. Come on guy, it’s not 1999 anymore, fairies on your website does not promote awesomeness. If you’re going for shitty highschool notebook art direction, go with dragons. Dragons rule.

And now I feel worse about the band for posting anything about it.

Oh yeah and there’s a new free track out. if you value your prior opinion of Smashing Pumpkins or Billy Corgan, don’t get it.

If you love both do what you want, you’re dead to me.

I was obsessed with them in junior high ... but yeah Corgan man you broke my heart man with that shitty Adore album.  It’s so frustrating actually being a fan of this group. I was just watching some of their old live shit from back in 1993-94 on the You Tube the other night and he was fuckin awesome back then.  I mean they were always an acquired taste (esp the vocals) but then I don’t know ... he shaved his head, got all religious, and started dressing gothic.  But most of all he just started writing shit song after shit song.

I’m trying to keep the rant level down but this shit gets to me because their music meant a lot to me when I was younger.  I still like Gish, still love Siamese Dream but it’s hard to be into a group when you have to basically block out the majority of their catalog from your memory.  I really don’t give a shit about the Jessica Simpson thing ... if he’s tapping that well more power to him I guess (apparantly sex with her is like crack cocaine).

I pretty much agree with you except that I actually like Adore. I don’t listen to it all the time, but it’s not as TERRRRRRRRIBLE as everyone thinks, (maybe it is…). It’s not a shitty sound, its just a total departure from the awesome stuff. The last three albums (adore, machina, and zeitgeist) are actually pretty good (again with the opinions). It’s just, yeah… he shaved his head, got all kookaroo, and started wearing dresses. Now, I’m all for eccentric musicians, but it’s almost like he’s a snotty teenager being different just to be different. See, I shaved my head and wear dresses and I have mystical powers! WoooooooOOOOooOOOOooo. He’s certainly not doing what he does for my benefit. It’s just like, crazy, man. His weirdness now doesn’t change the fact that he can shred the fuck out of a guitar and write some interesting lyrics once in a while (in the 90s lol).

I used to like Marilyn Manson too, but I was young, and he used to be cool. Times change, I got older, Manson turned into ... whatever it is he turned into, and now he’s totally irrelevant, writes shitty music, still can’t play an instrument, and nails bags of cocaine to his walls.

Circling back, I think the thing I am most disappointed with in these two is that ... they fell off. They used to be leaders in music and they used to be cutting edge, and they used to “stand for something” yadda yadda yadda… When I was in highschool it was all about BOYBANDS, and COUNTRY MUSIC (I’m from the Midwest, i apologize) and shitty shit that didn’t mean anything was EVERYWHERE, and there wasn’t really any GOOD mainstream music. I like music and I like talking with people about music. I liked identifying myself as a fan of those groups, and polarizing myself from the mainstream, as teenagers will sometimes do. Now it’s just like… they suck, who the hell cares? They’re not in charge of anything. They were the light at the end of the tunnel. I saw those bands as icons of musical justice awash in a sea of CRAP. Now they’re just like… nailing Jessica Simpson, or nailing bags of coke to walls.

Plus there’s so much good music right now I can’t really care about some of the stuff I used to listen to.

Oh yeah and In the town I live in the only way you will ever find anything truly good to listen to is if you go out there and FIND IT YOURSELF, because we don’t have radio stations that actually play “decent” music. It was country, or brittney, or insane clown posse.

I don’t mind that Manson fell off ... his style was so contrived and calculated that it had to end eventually.  When he did what he did he was the best at it ... I’ll still rock ‘Antichrist Superstar.’  The problem with him is he didn’t learn the most important lesson from Bowie.  Bowie put the Ziggy Stardust persona to rest and moved on (he all but disowned Ziggy) .. could you imagine if he was still trying to hang on to that look and style the way Manson has stuck to his shtick ... he’d be a fucking joke.  Then again I guess if Kiss can roll out their tired ass show based around that one good song every few years then who knows.

What frustrates me the most about Billy Corgan is that he’s actually sincere about everything he does ... almost to a fault.  He’s just too indulgent in regards to his own whims.  He needs James Iha or Sharon Osbourne (his ex-manager) to counter his excesses ... to tell him that sometimes you need to think “I like this but is anybody else going to?”

You should check out the interview he did with Steve Jones (ex-Sex Pistol).  I don’t agree with a lot of his political views but his views on the future of the music industry are interesting ( http://iamrogue.com/live/stevejones/interview-with-billy-corgan ).

I think Billy shaved his head because of a receeding hairline.

It is really really hard to let go of an artist whose work once meant something to you. Just remember, they let go first.

The MySpace page also has a banner ad for Alice in Chains’ new album.  Sweet.  I’m so fucked.

But I want it to taste delicious. I’m not an asshole.
